Electric cars were more popular as a mode of transport, until the starter motor made it easy to start petrol and diesel engines, powered by fossil fuels. Then Ford came along with the Model T, making cars affordable. Well done to Henry. Today the challenge is to make automotive transport clean, in a sustainable world, for a healthier future.

The days of the internal combustion engine may be numbered as EV technology gathers momentum, but piston engines may still have a starring role until the infrastructure (or technology) exists to replace them altogether.

APRIL 2023 EU LATEST

Germany and the European Union have set a new precedent for the future of combustion-engine vehicles. Germany will continue to allow the registration of new combustion-engine cars indefinitely, provided the engines exclusively use climate-neutral fuel, dubbed “e-fuel” by EU Commission vice-president Frans Timmermans

E-fuels, or synthetic fuels — which include the likes of e-methane, e-kerosene and e-methanol — are created by synthesizing captured carbon dioxide and hydrogen produced using renewable or CO2-free electricity.

Studies have shown that emissions of potent greenhouse gases like methane and nitrous oxide increase when e-fuels are burned. Additionally, conventional GHGs are still released with the burning of e-fuels, other than methanol.

The agreement is a result of an initial EU proposal to ban the sale of all new combustion-engine vehicles starting in 2035. Germany opposed the language, arguing a complete ban on combustion engines would harm the country’s auto industry.

Many parties have denounced the agreement. Benjamin Stephan, a mobility expert at Greenpeace, is quoted as saying:

“This rotten compromise undermines climate protection in transport, and it harms Europe.”

Alex Keynes, clean vehicles manager at non-governmental organization T&E, told the Guardian:

“[German] Chancellor [Olaf] Scholz is threatening to pull the rug from under the European Green Deal for the sake of saving polluting combustion engines.”

Clearly, IC technology holds dear to the hearts of many - and may be used without polluting planet earth, using genuinely clean burning fuels such as hydrogen. Hence, is a link in the chain of the development of mankind, that deserves a special place of honor for technological achievement and pioneering spirit. Hydrogen IC engines are being built today by (for example) JCB, that are clean burning, to replace equivalent diesel units.
